Suppressed Post-partum Lactation

Suppressed Post-partum Lactation

Persons most commonly affected: Lactating mothers
Organ or part of body involved: Mammary glands
Symptoms and indications: Inadequate milk supply.
Causes and risk factors: An inadequate milk supply is often caused by a mother\'s exhaustion. Other causes are stress, smoking, alcohol, excessive caffeine intake, and using low-dose birth control pills.
Prevention: Eat whole grains and cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables and foods that provide plenty of protein, calcium and iron. It is important to drink plenty of fluids to ensure you stay well hydrated when breast-feeding. A balanced diet that includes 5 servings of milk or dairy products each day will give you enough calcium.
