Chorea
Chorea is an irregular, rapid, uncontrolled, involuntary, excessive movement that seems to move randomly from one part of the body to another.
Persons most commonly affected: All age groups
Organ or part of body involved: Hands, feet, trunk, neck, and face.
Symptoms and indications: The list of signs and symptoms mentioned in various sources for Chorea includes the 13 symptoms :
Jerky spasms, Whole body spasms, Leg spasms, Arm spasms, Facial spasms, Twitching, Facial twitch, Leg twitch, Arm twitch, Writhing spasm movements, Muscle weakness, Clumsiness and Gait disturbances.
Causes and risk factors: The causes of chorea are:
Hereditary : Huntington's disease, Benign hereditary chorea, Wilson's disease, Leigh's disease and Neuroacanthocytosis.
Drugs : (neuroleptics, anti-parkinsonian drugs).
Metabolic : Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Pregnancy (chorea gravidarum).
Infectious : Sydenham�s (rheumatic) chorea.
Immunological : systemic lupus erythematosus.
Perinatal : hypoxia and kernicterus.
Toxins : carbon monoxide, mercury.
Others : tumor, trauma, cerebrovascular disease.
